You probably heard your parents and school teachers tell you for years, you must have a degree to get a good job. While holding a degree still does hold some value, the truth is that many employers today are looking for employees that have passion for what they do, have some talent, and are teachable. You don’t need a degree for those….
In the construction industry, many workers have no degree, therefore, many struggle when it comes time to write their resume, with skipping it all together. You must have a resume, whether you have a degree or not. Here are some tips on how you can write your resume, stand out from the crowd, and get that hiring managers attention:
- Have you taken some classes, hold a certification, or have started towards a degree? Make sure that you list all of this information on your resume. It is important to list all classes you have taken, which show your skill set, as well as any certifications you have received.
- Have you attended workshops, seminars, or other training sessions? Include those as well. Again, those shows your skill set, and shows that you are interested in professional development.
- Make sure that you have a section on your resume that showcases the skills you have. Many have found that if they list each skill, and then specifics of where that skill was used, it has been helpful to hiring managers.
In the construction industry, skill set is critical to most hires. While some positions do require a degree, often, hiring managers will look at others who have an exemplary work record, incredible skills listed, and a real passion for what they do.
Do not hold back applying for jobs just because you feel you will never get chosen because of a missing degree. Instead, look at your resume, make some of the changes listed above, and apply for that position you want!
