While there is plenty of opportunities in the construction industry today, many candidates are looking to reinvent their career.  Are you considering the same?  No matter what you reason for considering it, many have become complacent and want to learn additional skills in construction to further their career.  Here are a few things to consider if you are thinking about reinventing your construction career:

  • Before you make any drastic changes, take the time to really examine and consider why you want to make this change. Is there another underlying cause that is the root of this change?  It is best that you understand why you want to make this change, before you make it.  If you make a change for the wrong reason, you will find yourself back in this same scenario in just a short time.
  • What options do you have for the career change you want? Consider your training, apprenticeship, and job options that will follow with this change.  Make sure that the change will give you the best possible opportunities, instead of shrinking them.
  • How committed are you to this career change? You may need to take an unpaid training program or apprenticeship.  You may need to start at the bottom, again.  It is important that you understand how this change will affect not only your career, but your personal life as well.  Make sure you are prepared and ready for all the changes that will come with it.
  • Take the time to speak with several people that work in the area you want to move towards. In fact, you might even wish to ask one of them to be a mentor to you as you progress through the change.

Thousands of employees and job candidates in many industries consider changing their career on a daily basis.  If you feel that it is time to reinvent your construction career, make sure you consider all of these tips before making the big change.
