Skills You Need in the Construction Industry

Do you like working with your hands? Maybe the thought of building something out of nothing excites you! People that are creative, like to work with their hands, and are visualizers, often do very well in the construction industry. As the demand for construction workers increases, now is the time to understand what skills are needed to be successful in this industry.

Whether you have been working in the construction industry or are considered getting into the industry, below are some of the essential skills and abilities you must possess in order to land a job:

Strength and Stamina – there is a large physical component to construction work. In most situations, you will be required to be on your feet for 8 hours or more, lift heavy objects, climb ladders and buildings, and operate heavy machinery. If you have any physical restraints, you might want to reconsider what type of construction work you do.
Dexterity and Coordination – excellent hand-eye coordination is a must in the construction industry. Not only will you use hand tools that require this skill, but you must be able to move quickly and still be accurate. Many times, you will need to grasp items, assemble items, or install items while you are lying down or in other awkward positions, which takes great coordination.
Reading and Math – both reading and math will be used daily on the job site. You will need to be able to read directions, blueprints, and conduct math for calculating measurements, and adjustments.
Building and Mechanical – it is important to have an understanding of the types of materials used on the job, and the types of tools and machines used. Many construction employees specialize in certain building materials, for example concrete or drywall. Others, have obtained specialized training in operating different machinery. Even if you do not specialize in any materials or mechanical operations, it is best to have an understanding of them all.
Visualization and Perception – you must be accurate on a construction job. For this very reason, it is important to be able to visualize a job, as well as perceive potential issues that may arise. Precision on the job site is critical to not only the overall job, but to safety.
