There are hundreds and hundreds of articles and self-help tips on writing the perfect resume. In fact, you have probably seen and heard it all when it comes to writing it, however, every single day, changes occur in the job search world that can make it difficult to find a good job. Knowing what skills to include on your construction resume can help you stand out from the pack.
The job search market seems to be changing, almost daily these days, making it difficult to find the perfect construction job, even though there are plenty out there. Many hiring managers are looking for specific skill sets that many construction candidates simply do not list on their resume. Here are the skills you should list on your resume:
- Communication skills – these skills are important to hiring managers today. They need candidates that can communicate well both verbally and non-verbally, listen, and are clear and concise when engaging in a conversation.
- Organization skills – it is critical that construction candidates today have great organization skills, in addition to their trade skills. Hiring managers need candidates that can think on their feet and make decisions while on the job. Time management and planning are two additional skills that are needed while on the job today.
- Computer skills – this skill has started to surface and become more prevalent to hiring managers. So much new technology has emerged in the construction industry and hiring managers are looking for candidates that can not only operate a computer but can operate some of the new technology and software.
- Social skills – social skills were something not many hiring managers looked for in the past, however, today, this is an incredibly important skill. They need candidates that can interact with other workers, vendors, customers and more. Great social skills often show teamwork, empathy, and patience.
While your trade skills are extremely important on your resume and should be included in their own section, you should think about adding a section for some of the skills listed here. They may set you apart from other construction candidates and get you the job you want!
