If you have decided to make your career in the construction industry, most likely you have heard all the stories about how “back in the day,” it was all skill. It was a backhoe and a skilled operator that got the job done! Today, technology plays a big role in getting construction projects complete. But what does skill vs technology mean to you?

Having skill in your field is still very important today, however, working on your technology skills will greatly help you land the job you want. Here are a few reasons why you should consider increasing your technology skills:

Every day, new construction software is released. While it is difficult to stay current on all software, it is important that you understand which software is used in your particular area of construction. Many of the software companies hold training sessions, and you should attend as many as you can. Hiring managers want candidates that can already use the software they run.
Look for classes or seminars that show how to integrate new technology use with your current skill set. There are many classes that are teaching skilled construction workers how to implement certain technology into their work day.
If you have the opportunity to get certified in the use of some of the new technology, do it. With so much new technology being released, many hiring managers are finding hard to find certified operators. When you take the time to get certified, it shows the hiring manager you are serious about your career and want to stay current on technology.
Much of the new technology helps enforce safety. Make sure you showcase the additional safety skills you have on your resume.

Technology is infusing itself into the construction industry. You can deny it and stay with your “old-school” skills, or you can embrace the change and further your skill set. While technology does help streamline work processes, improve safety, and complete jobs faster, it still takes talent and skill to complete the work!
