Well, it is probably true – construction managers are a unique breed, they have a very distinct personality, one that helps them on the job every single day. Whether you currently are a manager, or want to become one, here are the traits often found in the personalities of successful construction managers:
- An interest in how things are designed, constructed, and maintained is a key element to a good construction manager. This genuine interest will make managing a project interesting and keep you engaged.
- You must be results-oriented to be a manager. Lots of people will count on you to get the project completed, and stay on track. Your organization of what needs to be done, will ensure the result is as expected.
- There is a certain amount of business savvy you must have to be a construction manager. While you do not need to understand all the details, you must have a cursory understanding of the business and how it all relates together.
- Enough said? Yes, you must be responsible in every role you undertake as a manager.
- While most construction managers are assertive, most are too aggressive. You must have a balance, be assertive to get the job done, while still be approachable by your workers, vendors, and customers.
- Being a good communicator is important, as you will be communicating with workers, vendors, customers, and office personnel. You should be able to communicate effectively.
