In light of all the recent natural disasters of this past season, many construction hiring managers are finding it a little easier to hire for their open positions.  Why?  With so many job candidates and construction companies coming to the aide of the areas hit the hardest, after the work is done, these candidates are looking to stay in the industry.

Millions of volunteers have been helping in the effort to cleanup and rebuild areas that were devastated by these natural disasters, and discovering that they truly enjoy the work they have been doing.  As a hiring manager, here are a few things to keep in mind when looking to grab these candidates once the rebuild effort is complete:

  • As with many construction companies nationwide, volunteering your company’s services shows candidates and those that are volunteering, that your culture is one they can relate to. Culture is extremely important to candidates today, and by volunteering your company services, it shows you want to give back to the community.
  • While many of the volunteers have little skill in the construction industry, this gives you the opportunity to give them some valuable training that can be used if you hire them. Take the time to teach these potential candidates some additional skills.  Not only will it help the relief efforts, but they will have a skill readily available when they are done volunteering.
  • As all of these volunteers come together with one main purpose, to rebuild what was destroyed, you will have the ability to network and meet some incredible people. Even if you do not hire any of the people you encounter, you will have networked with people from all over.  They will be a great source for you after the cleanup.

Natural disasters happen, and usually the construction industry bans together to help those in need rebuild and begin a new life after the destruction.  In light of this year’s disasters, more and more volunteers are looking to continue their work after volunteering with construction companies.
