You have seen the stats, and you have heard the rumors, landing the job you want in the construction should be easy right now, with the shortage of workers. However, this is far from the truth. Yes, there is a shortage of qualified workers, but that is the key – qualified.
Many construction companies are getting hundreds of resumes per day; however, the majority of these candidates are not qualified for the position. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want to land the job of your dreams:
- Do you have the appropriate training and skills for the jobs you are applying? It is important that you have the right skill set for the job you apply to. If you are lacking skills or training, then you should consider taking additional training.
- You need to be able to add value to the company you apply to. Make sure in your cover letter, resume, and interview, you have a value proposition – show the hiring manager how you will add value if hired.
- Want to get the attention of the hiring manager? Consider doing a short video instead of the cover letter. Make sure the video is specific to the job you are applying, and include why you want to work for the company, why you would be a good fit, and how you will make a difference.
- Most hiring managers will search online if they are interested in you, so make sure that you give them what they want. Consider having a personal website, and make sure that all of your social media platform profiles are consistent and accurate.
- If you have found the company and the job you really want, you might consider offering a trial run. Offer them a week of your services to see your work ethic, work product, and dedication.
There are many things you can do to land the job of your dreams, but consider these tips before you try.
