One of the biggest struggles and most common questions asked among construction workers is whether it is time to leave their current employment and look for something else. It is no secret that the trend in construction work is to “jump” from one job to another, however, that does not look well on your resume.
Before you make the decision to leave your current construction company, perhaps you might want to consider some of these questions:
- What is the reason you want to leave your current job and construction employer? Make sure that you fully understand the reasons why you want to leave your current job. Is it because of work-related issues or is it something personal. Once you know what your reason is, you might actually be able to do something about it, instead of leave!
- Can you really afford to quit your current job? This is probably the most common question, and typically the answer is no, however, in certain situations it is best to leave. When you quit a job prematurely, it can make it difficult to hold out for the job you really want. When money starts to get tight, you will most likely be forced to take the first offer – not what you want to do.
- Have you spoken with your supervisor or hiring manager? If the reasons you want to leave have to do with work-related items, make sure you give your current construction company the courtesy of trying to fix the problem. It is difficult for them to fix an issue they do not know about!
Many mentors and career coaches will tell you that is better to stay employed while you look for the perfect job. Take the time to reflect on why you believe it is time to leave your current construction job and make the decision for the right reasons, at the right time.
