Now, more than ever, construction hiring managers are being cautious of who they hire for their open positions.  Just because there is a shortage of workers in the construction industry, does not guarantee you a job offer.  You still must prove yourself during an interview.

Hiring managers are looking for more than just a warm body to hold a hammer, they are looking for job candidates that have skill and have the aptitude for the job at hand.  Here are a few ways you can prove yourself during your next construction interview:

  • A great way you can show your aptitude is by showing your intellectual curiosity during the interview. Ask intelligent questions regarding the industry, the company, and the position.  This will show the hiring manager a thirst for knowledge, something they look for in a candidate.  You can further this, by completing research on the company as well.
  • During your interview, the hiring manager will most likely ask you questions about how you would handle certain situations. They are looking for problem-solving skills, therefore, it is important that you can demonstrate how you can effectively handle situations when they arise.  Another way to showcase this skill is by reviewing the job description before your interview.  You should be able to determine what problems they are looking to solve with this ad and description.  Touch on how you can help with these issues during your interview.
  • Attention to detail is critical in the construction industry, therefore, it is important that you pay attention to every detail during your interview. Showing your detailed attention will show the hiring manager your focus, discipline, and work ethic, all skills and characteristics they are looking for.
  • Finally, they will be looking at your learning ability. They will need a candidate that can learn new skills, wants to improve, and is willing to continuing learning.

If you focus on these areas during your construction interview, you will be able to show the hiring manager you are the perfect person for the job!
