One of the biggest reasons for not getting hired in the construction industry, is because of a first impression. So many job candidates in construction, simply feel that impressions are not important, and all the hiring manager is looking for is a warm body to perform a job. This is far from the truth – first impressions count!
As you apply for construction positions, you must remember that your impression will be viewed from the minute you respond to an ad, all the way to how you handle the interview and job offer. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you navigate through your job search:
- Your first impression to any construction hiring manager will be how you respond to their job ad. Make sure that your resume, cover letter, and response are professional and portray a good impression of you and your skill set.
- When you are called to schedule your job interview, it is important that you speak professionally. Even if it is not the actual interviewer calling, if you give a bad impression during the call, the caller will note that for the interviewer. Everyone you speak with matters.
- Same is true when you arrive for your interview. The receptionist, the people in the hallway, and the interviewer will all be watching how you respond. Make sure that you have a good handshake, make eye contact at all times, and again, act professional.
- While in your meeting, it is important that you show appropriate body language. Do not cross your arms, shake your leg, or fidget in your chair. You may be nervous, but you must look like you are calm and collected. If interviews make you nervous, practice with friends or family.
- One of the biggest impression killers in the construction industry is how you dress. While you may wear less than perfect clothing on the worksite, it is unacceptable when you go for an interview. The dress code for an interview, even in the construction industry, should be a nice pair of pants and shirt, at the least.
It is important that you keep in mind the importance of first impressions. They do matter and do have an impact on whether you get the job!
