Hiring success and finding the right job candidates, which will turn into successful employees is difficult in any industry, but the construction industry has its own set of problems, with the shortage of workers and skilled workers. However, looking at your hiring process, may reveal some missing ingredients that are critical to getting job applicants consistently. Here are the critical ingredients you must have in your hiring process to achieve hiring success:
- What type of employee are you “really” looking for? Your entire hiring process will differ depending on your focus in hiring. Are you focusing on the position you must fill, or are you focusing on the person that will fill the position? Make sure this is clear before you begin your hiring process, as each have a unique set of steps.
- Your job ads should be worded to attract the type of candidate you want. For example, if you are focused on the position and need someone who can think quick on their feet or is a critical thinker, then your ad should be worded as such. The ad should clearly state all the skills, traits, and other attributes you are searching for.
- How many days is your entire hiring process? It may be too long for most construction industry workers. Look at ways to lessen the time required to go through your process. This will greatly enhance your chances of attracting talent.
- The last critical ingredient to your hiring success is your onboarding process. Many candidates, once hired become less interested if their first week on the job is not structured appropriately. Make sure that whatever steps are needed during the onboarding, they are clear, concise, and easy on your new employee.
Rethinking your hiring process may seem farfetched when it comes to your success in attracting and hiring job candidates, however, just like any other industry, these candidates are looking for an easier process.
