A job description in the construction industry is not really enticing. They often have the same wording, same set of skills required, and often get passed over for other more “colorful” job descriptions. Creating job descriptions that attract job candidates is something that every construction hiring manager can do easily, by following these simple tips:
- Before you post your next construction job ad and description, take the time to do a little revising. Reword the descriptions, using exact words to demonstrate the skills and expertise you are searching for. Your most important areas should be closer to the top of the description to show the importance to the job candidate.
- Many job descriptions are lengthy with all the legal jargon, however, fall short when it comes to what you really need to get across. It is best to keep all the “boring” legal wording for the end of the document. When most job candidates are searching, they will typically only read the first few paragraphs of the description, therefore, you must have the required skills and experience you seek at the beginning.
- You have in your mind exactly what you “do not want” in a job candidate, right? Why not communicate that in your job ad? When you place a statement stating exactly what is NOT wanted, you will get more qualified candidates. This will save you lots of time from viewing those that simply did not read directions and do not fit the role. For example, you can state that the job is available only to US citizens in a specific area. Do NOT apply if you do not meet this criteria.
You can create job descriptions and job ads that attract exactly the right candidate. A candidate that fits every aspect of what you are looking for.
