As 2018 begins, construction companies will be taking a good hard look at how they will recruit new candidates. It is no secret there has been a drought when it comes to good quality workers in the construction industry, however, many are looking to step outside the box in 2018 and try something different. In fact, many are turning to the community, and believe eventually the recruiting will follow.
Where will you find qualified construction candidates in the future? Most likely, you do not have an answer to that question – just as so many others in the industry. However, what if you invested time now in the community and in younger potential candidates? Would it not stand to reason that by taking the time now to mold and invest in younger potentials will eventually prove to be worthy for your business? The short answer is yes!
Consider adding a community component to your business in 2018, with the goal of attracting new candidates in a few years. Here are just a few suggestions you can implement:
- Volunteer at the local high school. Most high schools have a vocational component, where you can volunteer weekly to teach important construction skills. Not only does this give you a chance to show these potential construction workers the passion you have for the industry, but you can seek out those you want to groom.
- Similar to volunteering at a local high school, you can do something similar for lower grades. Promote projects for younger kids to show them the importance of construction and how fun it can be. Start them thinking about this career path early.
- If you do not have an internship program, you must have one!
- Find a project in your community that is in need of your services. Support it, promote it, and get the community involved. This not only will show the community you care, but will give others the chance to give back and make a difference.
Community will go a long way in helping your recruiting in 2018. Take the time to foster a close community, inside and out of your company!
