Some hiring managers will say that building a culture at a construction company is impossible, however, many have accepted the challenge and have found ways to not only embrace it but build it.  Culture is something that every single company must have today to attract, hire, and retain good job candidates.  The somewhat tricky part is learning to determine which construction candidates are a true fit both for the job and the culture.

Here are a few ways you can work on building culture at your construction company during the hiring process:

  • Who will be conducting interviews during your hiring process? It is important to make sure that anyone that will be speaking with the construction candidate understand the importance of looking for signs they will fit into the culture of the company.
  • The interview process tends to be a little different in the construction world, but you must ask a few questions that will show the candidates personality. Questions such as what do you do for fun, what is a perk you want your employer to provide and why, and what are your values outside of work?  These can all provide great insight into whether the candidate will fit in with the company’s culture.
  • Make sure that if the candidate asks any questions about the culture of the company, you answer them honestly. Be honest and upfront about the position and requirements.  It will be appreciated.
  • Use social media to your advantage when building your culture. Remember that job candidates are going to look online about your company, therefore, it stands to reason that if you have good social media posts reflecting your company’s culture, it will help attract candidates that would fit in.

Building culture at your construction company is not as difficult as it may seem.  Some of these tips can not only help you build a culture, but attract, hire, and retain construction candidates that are a true fit!
