Attracting and retaining talent in the construction is difficult currently, however, many companies are starting to think outside the box as to what will attract job candidates to their open positions.  Many have found that by offering ongoing training and education, they are able to attract more talent.  Consider attracting talent with education with these tips:

  • Most likely, you are getting applicants, but they do not possess all the necessary skills for your positions. There are ways you can reduce the skill gap, and attract candidates.  Offer specialized training as part of your benefits package.  Many companies are hiring and starting these candidates (at lower rates), and giving them the training and the skills they are missing.  Once they complete the training, they increase their wage.  This is a win-win for both company and job candidate.
  • Perhaps you need to look within your current employees. It is important to offer similar programs for your current employees.  Give them the opportunity to get further education or skills training, and offer them the chance for promotion or better jobs within the company.
  • Do not overlook recruiting at technical colleges or job fairs. Again, supporting their education and training shows that you are invested in the candidate and they are more likely to want to come and work for you.  Many companies have started to pre-hire students, so when they graduate, they have a job waiting.
  • While apprenticeships have declined a great deal over the last several decades, they are still very viable and can get your quality candidates. If you have not considered a program for your company, you should – and, if you have one, maybe you need to add more!

Yes, hiring in the construction industry is difficult right now, but there are ways you can attract candidates to your open positions, by showing the importance of training and education.
